On any given day, Clay Hunter jumps in his customized electric golf cart and zips a couple doors down the street to chat with his neighbors.
He and his neighbors have been doing it for years, and in recent weeks have turned the jaunts into informal community tours with gaggles of golf carts trekking across Grant-Valkaria.
“It’s clean. It’s green. It’s all of those good things,” he said. And because the electric motors make little noise, “no one even knew we went by.”
Grant-Valkaria is the latest place in Brevard County to allow its residents to drive golf carts on public roads.
County rules allow golf carts in a number of areas of unincorporated Brevard, including parts of Barefoot Bay, Suntree, Viera and several smaller golf communities. So does Rockledge.
And other communities across Brevard are either considering proposals for carts or have residents who are calling for them.
Grant-Valkaria’s ordinance took effect in November, allowing residents to drive golf carts on most town roads with speed limits of 35 mph or less. So far, 25 residents have registered their carts, and the town has had no issues so far, Town Adminstrator Rick Hood said.
“To the best of my knowledge, it’s working great,” he said. “We’re hoping they’ll use common sense, and so far, they have been.”
Allowing golf carts on the road came at the request of residents, many of whom were already driving them to visit friends in their neighborhoods.
Hunter, who pushed for Grant-Valkaria’s ordinance, said he and others just wanted the trips to be legal.
“The sheriff’s (deputies) have never given us a hard time, and they never intended to give us a hard time,” he said. “But if the (deputies) wanted to, they could have written you a ticket for it.”
Grant-Valkaria studied the issue for at least a year to address safety concerns and other issues raised, Hood and Hunter said. The town also contacted other municipalities that allow golf carts to research the topic.
“One of their arguments they used is that bicycles can share the roadway, horses can share the roadway, why not golf carts? They thought that was a good way to visit their neighbors without polluting the roadway,” Hood said.
