Naples’ Spencer Ciesla, who has signed with Vanderbilt, tied for 24th in the Dixie Amateur at TPC Heron Bay in Coral Springs and Woodlands Country Club in Tamarac. Ciesla shot 75-68-73-71 for an even-par 287.
Curtis Thompson, a brother of LPGA Tour teenage star Lexi Thompson, shot a 274 to win.
Naples’ Edward Figueroa, who has signed with FGCU, tied for 34th with 74-70-71-74/289, and Jake Marriott of Naples tied for 61st with scores of 77-70-74-72/293. Estero’s Conrad Hahne shot 77-70-74-77/298.
The Dixie Amateur, first played in 1924, is designated as one of the majors of amateur golf. Over 220 amateurs from 32 states and 18 other countries competed.
First Tee of Naples/Collier Junior Tour: The tour held its fourth annual Christmas Classic on Thursday at Hideout Golf Club.
Thomas Reber won the Boys 16-18 division with a 77, followed by Robert Butler and Tommy Jewell with 78s. Matthew Williamson won the Boys 14-15 with an 81, and Austin Witt was second with an 83. Trace Babb shot an 80 to win the Boys 12-13 division, followed by Bill Walsh with an 82.
Stephanie Carlozzi won the girls division with a 73, and Madison Hotchkiss was second with an 86.
Ace witness: Gordon Young may become a popular playing partner next month. The Audubon member witnessed a hole-in-one on Nov. 26, then another on No. 17 at the North Naples course.
Naples Amateur Golf Tour returns: The tour will starts its fourth season on Jan. 5 at The Rookery, then Jan. 10 at Hammock Bay, and Jan. 12 at Fiddler’s Creek.
New area tour: Jim Stockman, formerly of the Golf Channel Amateur Tour in Southwest Florida, has started a new tour called the World Golfers Amateur Tour in the area.
The tour’s Kickoff Classic will be Jan. 8 at Valencia. The new tour costs $189 per year. There is no entry fee for its USA National Championship. The five champions in each flight and top five on the Team USA order of merit will advance to the World Golfers Championship to compete against 40 other countries, with all expenses paid.
Youth Haven tournament: The 25th annual Wyndemere Tradition Golf Tournament will be Monday, Jan. 16 at Wyndemere Country Club.
Since 1987, the event has raised more than $1 million for Youth Haven’s children and families.
The entry fee is $250 for individual players and $900 for complete foursomes. Registration begins at 11 a.m., with lunch and a golf clinic at noon, and a 1 p.m. shotgun start. An awards reception and auction start at 5 p.m. Tee sponsor signs are available for $150.
