What better way to cure a New Year's Day hangover than a good game of disc golf? Whether you do, or don't, indulge a little too much the night before, the H2 Hangover at the Hanger Doubles will be a fun and exciting way to start 2012 off right.
This PDGA sanctioned C-Tier doubles tournament will be played on The Hangar Disc Golf Course at Wingfoot Lake State Park in Suffield, Ohio. $10 of each player's registration fees will be donated to the charity of the disc golfer's choice, making the event just another great reason to participate.
Though it's still five days away, the forecast calls for temperatures in the mid-40s in the northeastern region of Ohio, so it won't be too horribly cold on January 1st.
The park is located 11 miles southeast of Akron, Ohio and offers tall trees in a picturesque setting that includes a serene lake. In addition to the 18-hole disc golf course, there are paved walking paths, shelters, barbecue grills, playgrounds, horseshoe pits and much more.
The course itself is a fairly easy, good starter course offering mostly straight shots with short to medium distances, including some wooded holes as well as wide open. There are moderate elevation changes, with water coming into play on a few holes.
Fortunately, if you have a late night, tee-off for the tournament won't be until 10:00 a.m. Check-in and registration is from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., with a player's meeting at 9:45 a.m. As this is an ice bowl event, ice bowl merchandise will be available for sale.
Some of the disc golf players who are already registered for the event include Brian Parsons of Medina, Ohio who will be partnering up with Jeff Vacha of Brook Park, Ohio to compete in the open division.
Parsons was the winner of the Flight of the Zeppelin & Ice Bowl Event back in February, and he had a third place finish at the Ohio River Open and a second place finish at the Haunt at the Hanger, both in October. Vacha had a second place finish at the Can Am Cup in August and a fifth place finish at the Ohio River Open.
For football fans who were concerned about missing the Pittsburgh Steelers/Cleveland Browns game, it doesn't start until 4:15 p.m., so you should have plenty of time to get back home, or to the nearest sports bar to watch it.
